Chapter 15

I gave Larissa all the juicy details, as girlfriends do, and then I went home. After my giggles had worn off, I couldn’t help but think about James again. Such bizarre behavior. I really hoped he would pull his head out of his ass and realized what he’d done—and that Larissa would think long and hard before taking him back, if that was what she wanted.

I decided to drive by the shop and see if anything was going on. I found a parking spot (got lucky), and went around to the front, my heels clacking on the cracked sidewalk. The city really needed to redo it. This was a popular place at night with the nightclubs just down the street, and I was sure more than one drunk-ass kid has bit it by tripping over the uneven surfaces.

The caution tape had been removed, but the doors were locked fast. I had a key, but the big DO NOT ENTER BY AUTHORITY OF THE FIRE MARSHAL sign plastered in the front window of each space prevented me from using it.

Cupping my hands around my eyes, I pressed my face to the glass and peered into the shop. It looked relatively the same, just no water, so they must have cleared that out fast. It didn’t look too bad, honestly. I was sure it was just a precaution at this point. I walked a few steps and did the same at the bookstore window, and could also see the water was gone, but there was a big, black char mark on the very back wall. The large bookcase that had fallen had been righted, but books were scattered everywhere. I heaved out a sigh.

Then, I got an idea. Pulling out my small sketchpad and a pencil, I quickly drew the layout of the shop so I would remember it. The location of the small kitchen in back, the bookcases, some freestanding and some that were built into the walls, the large front desk that was built into the floor and against the right-hand wall. I wasn’t the best artist, but it would help me remember so I could make solid plans for the place. Once I was satisfied with the sketch, I put the pad and pencil away and walked back toward my car.

When I was almost to my car, and rummaging through my purse for change to feed the meter, my heel hit a large, uneven crack in the sidewalk. I threw my hands out in front of me, squeezing my eyes shut and bracing for the fall. Suddenly there was a hand gripping my upper arm and I was righted back to my two feet. I looked to see who had grabbed me, and gasped.

“Uh, thanks for that. What are you doing here?”

He smiled in his charming way, his brown eyes sparkling in amusement at me. “Who are you, the Downtown Police?”

I frowned. “No.”

“To answer your question, I came here looking for you. I had no idea your space was shut down.
